Focus: Catching the RC Bug
FOCUS: Every now and then, we focus on a fellow shedder and see what the’ve been up to and learn a little about our mates. Contact Jeremy, Phil or Don to get your story told.
What brings you to the shed? At first it was the range of tools that I don’t have at home. Now I go to every weekly meeting and really enjoy the camaraderie.
How long have you been at the shed? About 12 years on and off.
Do you have a personal project at the moment? Not at the moment, but recently I made a sail box for a friend’s International One Metre RC yacht and one for a DF65.
Can you tell us a bit about that project and did anyone at the Shed help you? It’s made of 3mm ply with a piano hinge down the side and silky oak strips. It took me a couple of weeks to make. I made it by myself. I have made a few of these now for members of my RC yacht club.

Is there anything you’d like to see change at the Shed? No, it’s great the way it is.
Have you ever volunteered for anything at the Shed? I used to do sausage sizzles at the hardware, but find standing all day too dificult at the moment.
Is there anything you’d like to learn how to do? Yes, I’m learning how to do lead lighting, so I can make a circular window for our house. The design will be sweet peas around the perimeter and probably a feature sweet pea flower in the centre.
Basil’s Bug
You may recall the talk by Russell Gray from the Wynnum Manly Radio Control Model Yacht Club in December 2022.
“After many years of sailing on yachts, I was lured into the world of radio controlled sailboats and have not looked back.
I ordered my first boat, a Dragon Force 65 and set about kitting myself out properly. I needed a stand for for my vessel then a case for extra sails. I brought my silky oak to the shed and brought it down to size on the thicknesser. My son gave me shrink wrap for the cord ends, and I was on a mission.
A few busy days in my shed and I was happy with the result. I've since bought rechargeable batteries and a charger plus many spare parts. This week I've been allotted a storage space for my boat in the garage (what's wrong with the dining table?)”
